General Information
Winona is on an island in the Mississippi River Valley. Winona was an early lumbering town first settled by New Englanders and Germans. The city headquarters for the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refugee, an area of 200,000 acres extending for about 300 miles along the Mississippi river from Rock Island, IL, to Wasbasha. Winona holds a Winter Carnival in early February. In early July attention turns to Steamboat Days, a week-long celebration that includes live entertainment, parades, the Rivertown Renaissance and a carnival.
Winona Armory Museum

Display of artifacts of Winona and Winona County's history includes a stained glass window exhibit, Main Street as it may have been, library and achieves. The Museum Shop offers traditional handcrafts, local products and historical reproductions, large selection of books, toys of the past, old fashioned candy. Open year round. Admission is free.
Polish Culture Institute of Winona

Acquisitions depicting local history, humor and folklore on display. Open May - Nov. 1; Monday thru Friday 10 - 3 and Sunday 1 - 3.
Julius C. Wilkie Steamboat Center
Levee Park Main Street on the Mississippi telephone Number - 507-454-6880 In 1956 the Winona County Historical Society purchased the James P. Pearson, a steamboat, and placed it in Levee Park as a symbol of their river history. The money for this purchase was donated by the Wilkie Foundations and the boat was renamed the Julius C. Wilkie, a pioneer machinist. The original Wilkie exists until March 22, 1981, when it was destroyed by fire. Through the combined efforts of the Wilkie Foundation and the dedication of the Winona community, a replica of the Wilkie was built and opened on April 11, 1983. Located on the first deck is a museum: containing river memorabilia and a slide presentation for private parties, business meetings and receptions throughout the entire year. Sugar Loaf
Sugar Loaf is an unusual limestone formation that is perched on a 500-foot bluff at the SE edge of town. The Sioux once held ceremonies on the monolith. A foot trail leads to the stone, which is lighted at night.
Garvin Heights Park
Garvin Heights Park is at the south central part of town on SR 61, is a 10.5 acre park affording a panoramic view of the Mississippi River Valley from a 575 foot bluff. Picnicking is available.
